Effective Autism Treatment

While there are effective treatments to address the symptoms of autism, no cure has been identified. As you get to know other families who have kids with autism, you will hear reports of chidren whose treatment has been so successful that they did not qualify for a diagnosis of autism when they were re-evaluated. You will also hear from parents who are still looking for treatments that are effective for their child.

Treatment can be effective even if it doesn't "cure" a person. Another way to judge effectiveness is by whether the intervention provides a significant improvement in a child's level or functioning or quality of life. The most important thing to know is that children with autism CAN learn, even those who are very significantly challenged.

At this time, there are several interventions that have scientific research to support their use with children across the autism spectrum, most notably applied behavior analysis and speech therapy. This does not mean that other therapies are not effective. It simply means that they do not have enough research support at this time to say that they are effective. It is very important to thoroughly research therapies prior to implementing them as well as the qualifications of the provider. Make sure that the therapy is individualized to address your child's unique needs.
